The Howis Trust began in 1869, the same year as Harrison Housing, and it is as a result of a recommendation from the Almshouse Association the two organisations came together to secure the future of the eleven residents in the studio and one bedroom flats. The buildings required extensive major repair and Howis Trust have not had the resources to carry these out. Harrison Housing became the managing agent and the two organisations have now merged. With the help of funds from the Homes and Communities Agency the accommodation is being brought up to modern standards expected by older people in the 21st Century at a cost of £1.2 million. The scheme was closed in September 2009 for the refurbishment work to be carried out which is expected to take a year. The scheme is a short walk from Herne Hill railway station and the local shops
