Norton Folgate Almshouses
Spitalfields, London

Were founded by a legacy from the will of Peter Jones on 6th April 1870. On 2nd October 1900 the trustees of the charity were granted leave to administer the charities of Samuel Saunders (for the Weavers) founded 1702 together with that of Thomas Taylor founded 1800.  The charities were finally amalgamated under the title of Norton Folgate Almshouses in February 1996.

The accommodation consists of 11, studio, one and two bedroom flats, Puma Court being in two blocks of four, each side of a gated courtyard with a communal laundry. The other three flats are in Commercial Street above the world famous ‘St John’ Restaurant opposite the old Spitalfields Market also owned by the charity.

The scheme have benefitted from a recent redecoration of all common areas and the services of a visiting caretaker. Recently planning permission ahs been obtained to extend the Puma Court Flats to provide four one bed and four two bed flats to replace the studio accommodation.  The development is a an early stage and grant funding is being sought from the HCA.
